Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a way of being in present-centered awareness, in which each thought, feeling, or sensation that arises in the attentional field is acknowledged and accepted as it is.  It involves paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.

Scientific research has shown that mindfulness can:

  • Boost the body’s immune system
  • Reduce debilitating stress
  • Shift away from anxiety, depression and aversion
  • Improve ability to cope with pain
  • Improve overall happiness and well-being

The Mindfulness–Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) programmes are an intensive eight-week training to empower participants to take an active role in the management of their health and wellness. The classes meet weekly for 2 hours and there is an all-day session around the sixth week. Participants are asked to practice mindfulness meditation and/or mindful movement for 30-45 minutes a day with instructional CD’s.

During an 8 week MBSR / MBCT course you will:

  • Learn how to work more effectively with stress
  • Learn the theory and practice of Mindfulness Meditation
  • Learn gentle mindful yoga
  • Gain skills that promote healthful living and wellness

MBSR was pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. and assisted by Saki Santorelli, Ph.D. and colleagues in 1979, at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, USA.

MBCT is based on MBSR and has been endorsed by NICE (the UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence) as an effective treatment for prevention of relapse for people who have been clinically depressed 3 or more times and who are currently well.  It is commonly attended by people for general wellbeing.

Research shows that through active participation in the management of their health and well being, MBSR is enormously empowering for participants suffering from hypertension, heart disease, chronic pain, cancer, gastrointestinal problems and psychological problems such as anxiety and depression.

Participants have stated that they feel less judgmental and critical of themselves and subsequently to others. Many also report a decrease of the frequency and length of medical visits to hospitals, emergency rooms, and health care professional offices. There has also been a noticeable decrease in the use of prescription and non-prescription medications, and an improvement in emotion regulation, learning and memory processes.

One to one MBSR sessions.  In addition to the 8 week MBSR group Salma offers one to one MBSR sessions in Brighton (Wednesdays) and London Fitzrovia (Tuesdays) meeting 1 hour for 8 successive weeks.  This may be suitable for anyone who may not wish to join a group or who cannot make the group times.  Course content and times can be tailored to meet your personal needs.  By developing mindfulness practices you can help yourself to experience more openness, kindness and clarity, and maintain a calmer, more peaceful way of being.
